Jonathan Pernell , DVM
Dr. Pernell is a native of Western North Carolina and has lived here most of his life. He is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and minored in Chemistry. He went on to obtain his Veterinary Medical Degree from Mississippi State University, where he graduated with honors. Since graduating vet school, Dr. Pernell served several years on the Henderson County animal advisory committe, making recommendations for the shelter and for county ordinances, and he served on the REACH (emergency hospital in Asheville) managing board for several years before it became privately owned. Dr. Pernell is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Feline Practioners. He has worked closely with Community Partnership for Pets, Blue Ridge Humane Society, and the Henderson County shelter to aid sick pets that need adoption. In 2007, Dr. Pernell joined with Dr. Zehr to purchase Laurel Park Animal Hospital. Dr. Pernell later purchased his partner's shares to become the sole owner of Laurel Park Animal Hospital. He has special clinical interests in ophthalmology, cardiology, and dermatology in dogs and cats. Dr. Pernell is married- he and his wife, Michelle, live in Hendersonville with their children, two dogs, and one fish. Dr. Pernell also enjoys attempting to play golf, any type of fishing, and spending time at the beach with his family.
Lil Herron, DVM
Dr. Herron has a combined experience of 23 years. She was a certified veterinary technician and ultimately decided to earn her doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University in 2008. Dr. Herron lives in Hendersonville with her cat, Francis and a King Charlies Cavalier mix, Ramona. She specializes in emergency medicine, specialty care, palliative, and hospice veterinary care.
Dorene - Office Manager
Dorene joined our staff in 2017 after moving here from Ohio. She has been working in the veterinary field over 25 years and can’t imagine doing anything else. She and her husband Greg traveled extensively with the Air Force for 21 years. They decided to make North Carolina their permanent home after vacationing here often and falling in the love with the mountains. They share their home with two dogs and one cat. She enjoys spending time with her family, pets, hiking, biking, Zumba and rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Loretta - Client Relations
Loretta studied at Blue Ridge Community College and received an office-administration/ medical office diploma. Loretta is a mother of two boys, Nicholas and Bentley and one daughter Elizabeth. She has three dogs, Duke, Sadie and Black Shadow, and one cat, Chester. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family.
Karen - Client Relations
Karen is native to Asheville, NC. She has been in the veterinary field since 2005. She has an Associate's degree from AB-tech in Science. Karen lives with 2 pomeranians, Niko and Kylo, and a few cats. For fun, Karen loves going to the beach and spending time with family.
Choena - Registered Veterinary Technician
Choena is a native to the mountains of WNC. She became a registered veterinary technician in 2014, and joined our team in 2015. She has special interests in animal behavior and nutrition. She lives with her husband, Patrick, and their daughter, Astoria. They have 4 dogs: Sequoya, Dray, Ginger, and Butters, a cat named Teyla, and a snake named Slimer.
Valerie- Client Relations
Valerie is a Florida transplant and moved here last year with her husband, John, and their German Shepherd, Cindy. They have been frequent visitors to the Hendersonville area for many years and heard the mountains calling! Although Valerie is new to the field of veterinary care, she brings with her a true love of animals and many years of clerical and customer service experience. She looks forward to this new chapter in her life and to helping all the furry patients of Laurel Park Animal Hospital!
Megan- Veterinary Assistant
Megan grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, but has been living in Asheville for over 15 years and calls these mountains home. She graduated from Appalachian State University in 2003 with a Bachelors degree in Sociology. Megan has a strong love for animals and has been working in the veterinary field for 10 years. She is a proud mom of two dogs, Brutus and Kodiak, and enjoys exploring the mountains with them. She loves nature, hiking and being outside. She also loves going to see live music. She hopes to make your experience at Laurel Park Animal Hospital a positive one.
Joey is a Labradoodle. He loves long car rides with the windows down, eating treats and getting belly rubs. Joey lives with Dr. Pernell and can be seen in the office daily. Most days at the hospital he can be seen greeting clients, welcoming the pets, and taking long naps. He also has an important role of being a blood donor dog when needed.
Oscar is our office cat. He enjoys sleeping in boxes, pats on the head and sitting in available laps.
